Process #1

Design

Everything starts with an idea – it is this idea or ideas that develop into that creative aspect, which is the Design Process. It is this process that determines the functionality-but also the beauty and art of the project.

These ideas are a shared collaboration between our shop and our customers – architects, designers, contractors, and homeowners. They become the very foundation of the project upon which all of the other processes are supported.

During the Design Process, materials and finish are selected, and construction details are worked out that affect and determine the Fabrication Process.

Material Selection - Materials are selected based on design decisions. Core materials are selected based upon the type of use, stability, and longevity. The goal is to fabricate with lasting functionality in mind.

Face materials are hand-selected for beauty, stability, grain match, and consistency of tones if needed. It is the special qualities of each type and piece of wood that tell a story of its uniqueness and beauty.  Wood, however, is a very dynamic material, and it is important to understand the unique attributes within each species. By understanding this, we then have the freedom to design and create within its parameters.

Milling/ Assembly - The goal during Milling or Assembly is to aim towards a tolerance of “0”. By enveloping this concept, we train ourselves to always work towards accuracy and precision. This, in turn, helps ensure consistency of the finished product.

Finishing

It has been said – “The finish can make or break a project”! This is true with all of the various processes but probably to a lesser degree than it is with the finish. Depending upon the use, it is the finish that brings out the beauty of the wood and is its protective insurance against day to day use. We use finishes that meet the needs of the specific function of the project. It is very important to understand what finishes to use for each specific application. These finishes are also as varied as the applications they are used for. They vary from hard and durable finishes, i.e., conversion varnishes and polyurethanes – to – various oils that may or may not have hardeners in them.

Installation is the culmination of all the other processes and the fruition of our efforts. The goal is to always “meet” or “beat” our customer’s expectations within the design, quality, and function of the project. It is upon installing that this end-goal is achieved. We approach the installation site with the utmost respect, care, and efficiency.
